Automatic Shutoff Valves ( Earthquake Shutoff Valve ) are created to automatically shut off gas flow in the event of an earthquake. In past major earthquake disasters, much of the damage has been done by fires starting after gas lines ruptured and ignited. Automatic gas valves may help to prevent this in some situations. Certain cities and counties in California have rules and regulations mandating their use in new construction and in some remodels.
According to Wikipedia an earthquake valve is “automatic way to shut off the low pressure regulated gas supply to a structure during a major earthquake and/or if a pipe is broken.” Earthquake Valves are also sometimes known as Seismic Valves.
It is also important to note that once a Seismic or Earthquake valve has been triggered turning it back on may require either a licensed plumber or a technician from your local power company. There may be local ordinances and rules governing this where you live.
Marin County Ordinance about Gas Valves, ORDINANCE NO. 3322
Contra Costa County Ordinance on Gas Valves, Ordinance 718-8
Alameda County Gas Shutoff Ordinance
These are just three of the ordinances found in a quick google search. Just because your county is not listed here does not imply that there are no codes or ordinances as such.
