About the List of Firewise Communities in Marin County California, USA:

Our list of firewise areas or communities in Marin is based off of public information. Although it is intended to be accurate and complete, it is a partial list as of the date of this publication. The article was written in January of 2022.

We pulled all Marin locations that we could find, but things change and they change frequently. Certain areas could have lost their accrediation and other areas added. For a complete list please contact the Forest Service or your local muncipality. In some rare situation we corrected what we believed to be inaccurate spelling or presentation.

Some areas are Home Owner Associations [HOAs], some “Neighberhood Response Groups” [NRGs], and others are “Fire Safety Groups” [FSGs]. Yet others still seem to lack a definition of their exact organaizational type. I would not assume that just because a group is not listed with an HOA that it is indeed not an HOA or otherwise. [If you see room for improvement here, please do contact me.]

Some insurers, such as FAIR provide discounts to firewise locations. The discount for being in a firewise community with FAIR is significant.

What is Firewise?

Firewise is a community designation program sponsored by the US Forest Service. The designation program was created to “help neighbors in a geographic area get organized, find direction, and take action to increase the ignition resistance of their homes and community and to reduce wildfire risks at the local level.” Essentially firewise was created to help local areas manage their own wildfire risk. There is a focus on reducing fuel and safety preparation.

Having a firewise certification may assist homes in getting a discount with their home insurance with a few specific insurers. The most notable is the California FAIR plan. The California FAIR discount is significant typically.

What do Communties Need to Do to Qualify as Firewise?

In order to qualify as a firewise community, the entity needs to follow a rather complex five step plan. The first step involves seeting up a Board Committee, followed by the creation of a fire risk assessment. Next steps include the creation of an action plan and community outreach. Lastly the named entity for the firewise proposed community needs to apply. And of course get accepted. If any given community is interested they should visit firewise themselves to inquire. This makes it sound a lot simpler than it really is in reality.
