Wildfire Season 2015 in Marin

It is once again wildfire season here in Marin, Sonoma, San Francisco, San Mateo, Contra Costa, Alameda, and the rest of the counties in and around the San Francisco Bay Area.   These past three years have seen an unprecedented drought and with it comes increased danger from wildfires.   Please take the utmost precautions when you visit wild lands and in and around your property.  Marin county is rather unique because of the amount of public/open space land and fuel that we have here.

Some general precautions that we should all consider with respect to wildfire:

1.  Do not smoke or make a campfire anywhere near fuel.   For campfires only create them in approved areas either from the park service or forest service or other.

2.  Educate your children about the dangers of fire.

3.  Make sure your vehicle is not a potential issue, either by dragging a chain or general maintenance issues.

4.  If you see something that seems like a danger, tell someone, your neighbor, the fire department, etc.

5.  Create defensible space in and around your home.  The first 30 feet around your home should be free of most trees and large bushes.  The next seventy feet beyond that should allow for room between trees and bushes and the tree limbs should not come closer than approximately ten feet from the ground for larger trees.  Your roof and rain gutters should be clear of all debris and the roof should be in good safe condition.   Mow your lawn and cut down on unwanted brush, however, due so in a safe manner.  For more information about creating defensible space please visit Ready Set Go Marin.

6.  Your town or community may allow for fire departments to make inspections of your property, consider doing so.

This is just a general partial list, there are many other numerous precautions you should make.
